I have owned all three generations of PlayStation and will undoubtedly own the forth.
I have only ever owned an Xbox once, that was because I had a bit of spare cash and a lot of people I knew owned one and played Call of Duty (back when I liked it). But after 2-3 weeks, I found it was gathering dust. I had paid £200 for something I had played once or twice. So I sold it to my younger brother, whose 360 had just broken (for the 5th time). Just a bit of advice, if you're thinking of selling your 360, don't do what I did and forget to cancel my direct debit to Xbox Live. I found out over a year later, I was paying £5 a month to Microsoft for an account I no longer owned.
From experiencing both consoles, even though one was for a short time, I can conclude the following.
- Both consoles have an equally strong line up of exclusives.
- Both have very similar graphics on cross platform games.
- Both have annoying 12 year old American kids shouting abuse at you.
I have seen many 'comparison' videos on YouTube, where someone runs the same game, side by side and compare the graphics. Yes, if you stare at the for long enough, you will notice a difference, but nothing that will ruin your gaming experience.
The console war heated up back in April 2011, when PSN (PlayStation Network) was hacked and was down for a month. I could feel the smug looks from my 360 owning colleagues, each time I came into work. Constantly asking me if it was working yet. Then again, as I kept saying, it IS a free network. Not that made me feel any better. Although, that said, for an entire month, I went to bed before 2am. But not before aiming a few 'annoyed' tweets toward Sony.
So what if you own an Xbox and someone you don't know or care about owns a PS3. Get over it. There are aspects of the 360 I wish PS3 had. Cross game chat would be lovely. Personalising my own little man on the dashboard would be fairly enjoyable. Although I like to spend my time playing games, rather than making a man have a red hat. PS3 has real money, too. Not Microsoft points. That's just silly.
I know the 'console war' will always exist if there are fairly well matched consoles around. Who knows, with the intoduction of the 'Wii U', we could have a three way. Although, if they make games about bowling and stroking ponies, then it won't be much of a contender.
So yeah, just accept peoples choice and let them get on with it.
Oh, by the way. Microsoft. Kinnect is awful.
Just saying.
