Defending Social Networking

I seem to be spending an awful lot of my time defending social networking at work or on nights out.

A lot of people look down on you, when you mention that you like social networking. They think all people do, is tweet about what they had for lunch or how their cat is after the vet.
I can see the argument from both sides. I can see how, from the outside, telling strangers what you're up to and what you're thinking, can sound very dull. You've got to look very hard at Twitter, follow the right people with the same interests and you might find yourself immersed. I'm lucky, 99% of the people I follow and who follow me, are gay. So we have a massive amount in common.

I have met some amazing people through Twitter. I honestly see them as 'online friends' than followers. I understand how sad that sounds.

I like to use it to relieve my stress throughout the day. Getting my anger and putting it online makes me feel a lot better. I'd rather do it via Twitter, than going out stabbing old ladies and stamping on kittens.

Facebook on the other hand, is much more mainstream. I used to use it a lot, now I just use it to keep up with old friends and share information etc. My opinion of it has changed a lot recently. I think they have tried to add too much. There is so much going on, it's hard to keep track of who said what and when. The Facebook iPhone app is beyond broken. It crashes constantly and is so slow and complex to use, I give up after a few minutes.

On a similar note, I once attended the wedding of someone whom I'd never met and only ever spoken to whilst shooting people online on PS3. I drove half way across the country to meet him. His best mate couldn't make it and I was sort of his best man. He's since turned out to be a great friend and a helpful squad mate. (Geek).

Don't judge me.

Thanks

  1. I was told I post too much about drinking on social media, so I stopped that and started posting crap. Now I'm getting crap for posting too much crap about nothing. I haven't spent a lot of time caring about my social media image, but now that I do, it paralyzes me from posting anything. Feh.
